The Bowen Technique

Your body has an amazing ability to self-heal and your Bowen therapist will work with this.  During a Bowen session, gentle rolling moves are made over muscles, tendons and fascia which sets up a dialogue between the body and the brain.  At various points your therapist will pause for a break, possibly even leaving the room, which allows the brain to assess what is happening, decide on a response and start a healing process.  These breaks are an important feature of Bowen and will often prompt deep relaxation for the client.

What does it treat?Bowen Technique

Bowen is a holistic therapy and aims to balance the whole person, not just the symptoms.  There are many advantages to this:

  • The source of the problem may not be where the pain is located.  Everything within the body is connected so a pain in one area may actually be caused by a problem elsewhere. If we were to focus on just that one area of pain it might offer temporary relief, but the source of the problem will be missed.

  • Secondary problems may also respond.  For example, if the aim of your visit is to relieve hay fever symptoms, you might also find improvement to that niggling neck ache you've put up with for years.

  • Everything is included.  Bowen works on the Autonomic Nervous System and encourages changes to bring balance back to the whole body. As well as addressing musculo-skeletal problems, it can also help people suffering from chronic conditions such as Fibromyalgia, PMT and IBS.

  • It relaxes the whole body.  Bowen can be very effective in cases of emotional stress, where relaxation is a prime factor in easing pain and anxiety.  It is often a great help in improving the quality of life for those who are terminally ill.

Some of the conditions which have responded well to Bowen include:

Asthma
